Isabel Knowles – middle of back row

Worked from 1912 onwards

Glenarm Castle operated its own dairy from 1700’s. For centuries the estate sold surplus milk and butter via horse and cart deliveries round the countryside. Among the many skilled workers employed in The Antrim Estates Dairy was Isabel Knowles. Isabel was the chief dairymaid who won acclaim for her butter making, taking first class honours at both Balmoral and Ballymena shows. She later married John Galbraith who also worked in the Dairy. During her time as a dairymaid, the 11th Earl of Antrim, who was also known as The Buzzard, would have been residing in the castle. The Buzzard was known for his love of cattle farming and would go to Scotland to purchase cattle and herd them back to the dairy at Glenarm all by himself.
